Witnesses say that victim Jerry Lewis walked into the Gardena, CA, store without a mask on and was approached by security guard Umeir Hawkins. There was an argument, and Lewis left the store. However, shortly after, he returned and the argument resumed. Lewis then left again – and, as he walked away, Hawkins drew a handgun and shot him.
Hawkins has a previous conviction for felony assault dating back to 2013, so he’s legally barred from owning a gun. He and his wife have both been charged with possession of a handgun by a felon. Now Hawkins has also been charged with murder and, if convicted, faces up to 50 years in prison.
